IR panels - everything you need to know about a modern and healthy way of heating

In which buildings is heating with IR panels suitable?

The IR heating system is suitable for all types of buildings, especially as the main or additional heating.

What does the abbreviation IR stand for?

There are no harmful rays with IR panels

What is the effect of infrared (IR) rays on health

IR rays are a well-researched field and have a very beneficial effect on our body.

How do IR panels work?

The principle of operation of IR panels is similar to the operation of the sun, the Earth receives heat from the Sun through various IR waves. IR heat surrounds us every day and is the most natural heat. IR heating does not heat the air, instead the heat is absorbed into walls, floors and objects. As a result, due to the warmer surface, the air is also heated, but it does not raise dust (since the temperature is approximately the same throughout the room) and does not dry out the air.
The IR heating panels of the Ekosen system convert almost 100% of electrical energy into heat, which should clearly tell you that there are no losses. Most of the energy is transferred to space through, to humans and animals, the most natural form of heat. The remaining heat is transferred to the objects with which the IR panel is in contact. Objects absorb the energy of IR waves and emit it back in the form of heat, which is transferred partly to the air, partly to the objects and partly back to the surroundings.
Therefore, IR waves do not heat the air directly, like conventional methods of heating, but mainly heat things in their immediate vicinity – floors, walls, objects, liquids and living beings, which in a natural and healthy way emit heat into the surroundings and evenly heat the space and air in him. As a result, the entire room has the same temperature and there is no feeling of e.g. coldness under the table, as is usual with ordinary heating, where the air circulates. The IR heating panel turns your room into one large low-temperature radiator. This is a key feature of IR heating, which leads to many other advantages, which we will present below. In fact, we can say that IR heating is a more natural and healthy way of heating compared to convection. Natural because it mimics the natural heating cycle, and healthy,
The exceptional efficiency of IR panels can be further increased by using a special, unique THERMOSUN thermal ceramic coating. The coating contains thermo-ceramic balls that reflect heat faster from the wall. IR panels only heat the upper surface of the wall, and the coating thus helps to heat the room even faster and, as a result, we save even more. In addition, it helps to prevent the appearance of mold on very damp and cold walls. It can also be used for painting purposes, when the panel has been in use for several years, it is simply refreshed by repainting and it is like new again.
IR heat surrounds us every day and is the most natural heat.

Installation and required power of IR panels

If you are afraid of inconvenience after installation, we can take your fear away, as our installers leave behind a tidy environment and restore the building to its original state (they also carry out plastering…). For a free viewing, measurement of the premises and an informative offer,  .write to us .

An installation intended for lighting is not sufficient in principle. Otherwise, there are certain cases where the installation for lamps can also be used. Electricity is usually derived from the existing installation, as IR panels do not require much power. In cases where higher panel powers are required, electricity is drawn directly from the cabinet. The installation is thus very affordable and easy. If we compare: e.g. installation for a heat pump for a house of 140 m2, where the complete installation costs up to €13,000, while the installation for IR panels for the same area costs approx. €5,000 for roughly 11 panels and 7 IR Sun WiFi smart regulators with professional installation (flush).

Professional installation of IR heating

In our company Ekosen, installation is carried out by professionally trained installers who use the best tools and installation materials. In this way, you avoid unnecessary stress in the process itself, as well as the duration of the installation.

Calculation of the power of IR panels

We should not neglect the importance of installing the IR panel. It must be mounted in the right place (in most cases it is recommended to install it on the ceiling) and have enough power. Consumption may be higher due to insufficient power.
A comparison of consumption for an average-sized house of 140 m2 is approx. €400 annually. The reason for the low consumption is also the operating time of the panels, which varies only from 3-4 hours a day due to the adapted operation. An average insulated apartment, measuring about 50 m2, thus needs a total panel power of about 3,000 W. For a medium-insulated apartment, about 2,160 kilowatt hours (kWh) are used annually, which means €259 per heating season. Thus, compared to oil furnaces, the savings are as much as 50% or even up to 60%. In addition, we have to take into account maintenance costs for the remaining heating methods, e.g. chimney services, etc.
For a rough calculation of the required power of the panels, the rule applies that we need about 65 W for one square meter of space (average insulation). Due to the even distribution of heat, we also adhere to the rule that it is always better to put more panels of lower power in a room than fewer panels of higher power.
The required power of the panels is different for each room (and the purpose of use) and also depends on specific parameters, such as: quality of insulation, windows, humidity in the room, desired temperature, panel positions, heat losses and, of course, the purpose of the room.
Before installation, therefore, an energy calculation of the building is mandatory. Based on this, the power of the IR panel and the place of installation are determined. The energy calculation is carried out by IR heating experts who are qualified to do so. We do not recommend installing it yourself, as various errors can occur, which later manifest themselves in the form of higher consumption or a non-functionally heated room.

IR SUN WiFi controller

The IR Sun WiFi regulator is adapted for IR panels and is suitable for all generations due to its ease of use and clarity.
The main screen shows basic information about the set room temperature, the actual temperature in the room and the activated heating functions. You can monitor the power of your IR heating system in real time.
You will be able to check how much energy you used to heat your space. The IR regulator has an advanced algorithm that calculates the necessary heating in the room. Most classic thermostats have a hysteresis of +/– 0.5 °C. This means that when e.g. set the heating temperature to 22 °C, the thermostat switches off the heating only when the room temperature reaches 22.5 °C. We unnecessarily heated the room by 0.5 °C more than we wanted, and the result is a higher consumption of electricity than in this case with classic thermostats. With the IR Sun WiFi regulator there is no such fluctuation, so with this regulator consumption can be further reduced by around 25%. In the case of high ceilings, even up to 30%. Detects higher outside temperatures, e.g. the sun, which heats the interior space and, based on this, immediately reduces the heating power. Its advantage is also that

IR SUN app

The app optimizes your IR heating system. It is compatible with a smartphone (Android or iOS). With the app, you can always check the consumption of electricity for heating, change settings or set the desired temperature. The application allows you to review electricity consumption, for each regulator separately or for the entire heating system. In the library, you can create and save heating schedules for an object or an individual room. The IRSUN application will be your favorite application, as it will ensure that your apartment is always warm when you return home
With its help, you can change the settings in the entire Ekosen IR heating system or individual IR heating elements in one fell swoop. The IR heating system can be managed by several users, to whom you give permission via e-mail.

Heating only one room and dividing the investment

If we look at the whole picture, we recommend investing in IR panels, which will serve as the main heating in your house or apartment and not just as supplementary heating. Why?
The reason is that IR panels support each other. That is, the panel installed in the living room will heat the walls of the living room and the IR panel in the adjacent room, for example. in the bedroom it will warm the bedroom walls. As a result, the panels switch off in sync and operate for less time, which consumes less energy. It often happens that customers decide to heat with panels in one room, they open up this room and thus the consumption is higher, because the power emitted by the panel is too small. In such a case, we advise you to split the investment. This means that you equip the rooms with IR panels gradually and according to your wishes.

How do we save with the Ekosen IR heating system?

IR heating is the most economical and the savings can be extraordinary. If you currently heat with electricity with ordinary radiators, with oil or liquefied gas, have an old stove with natural gas or wood, do not use all living areas, then you will be able to save even more than half of your annual amount for heating, demonstrable savings of users reach up to 60 percent.
If you are buying a new building, your savings can be even greater, as you can save up to 70 percent on the investment in heating and other maintenance systems. All this is a calculable fact if we look at the total costs of ownership of heating systems, which include maintenance, consumption, service life and investment.

IR heating has almost 100% efficiency

IR heating has almost 100% efficiency, as the electrical energy is almost completely converted into heat in the room where the heating element is located. As a result, there are no losses through the chimney and pipes. Ventilation losses are reduced, as there is less hot air in the room, and the rise in air temperature is also faster, as heated objects that accumulate heat heat it up faster, and as a result, the IR panels are switched on for less time than with a convection heating system.
Over time, due to the drying of the walls, the insulation effect increases. The fact is that damp walls in some cases reduce the insulation effect by up to – 50%.
Each room can be heated just as much as needed. At the same time, we avoid problems with condensation when the temperature rises rapidly. The system is extremely responsive, which means additional savings during the transition period.
We feel that real heat because all objects are warmer between 2 ⁰C and 4 ⁰C and thus you will no longer have cold walls drawing heat from our body. There is no longer a need to raise the air temperature because there are cold walls around you. Cold objects, walls and floors are the main reason why you can be cold in winter, despite the fact that it is 23 ⁰C on the temperature controller.
You can save even more with IR panels in combination with photovoltaics.

Where we all use the SUNLIFE IR panels of the Ekosen heating system

IR heating is the most economical and comfortable heating solution in almost all situations. Regardless of the complexity or shape of the room, experienced specialists for IR heating can create an ideal thermal comfort with the correct selection of the product and its placement, with very low heating costs.

It is a misconception that the use of IR panels is not the best solution in some rooms due to features such as: low ceiling, poor insulation, poor electrical wiring, humidity, large windows… The use of IR panels for heating is practically unlimited. The panels can also be used for additional heating, but in no case do we recommend using them only for additional heating. In the following, let’s look at some examples of use.

IR panels in living spaces

The IR heating panels of the Ekosen heating system can be installed anywhere: in a children’s room, living room, dining room, bathroom, vacation spaces, motorhomes, living containers, in short, anywhere we want to achieve a warm and pleasant living climate with little money.
Due to the wide range of shapes, colors and weights, the IR panels of the Ekosen heating system fit perfectly into any room, both on the ceiling and on the wall.

IR panels in offices

The IR heating panels of the Ekosen heating system are simply installed on the suspended ceiling in offices, just like in apartments. The working climate becomes significantly better, as air swirl is reduced, the air maintains normal humidity, moisture condensation is reduced, and the lack of heat becomes a thing of the past. The heating can be zoned and thus adapted to the different needs of the employees. Due to the excellent responsiveness, larger overnight temperature drops are possible and thus additional savings. You can also manage each office separately and have the costs determined down to the penny, in addition, you can improve the “mutual climate” of the team with zonal adjustment.

IR panels in healthcare - health center, Nursing homes and hospital's...

Heating with IR heat is becoming more and more popular in hospitals precisely because of its hygienic and health benefits. The heating plates do not create air currents that carry microorganisms and can also be cleaned without any problems. Another thing that counts is that they do not dry out the air, which is appreciated by patients with respiratory diseases. Infrared waves have been used for decades for special medical and therapeutic purposes.

IR panels in saunas and for hot yoga Studio

You can also make a sauna using the IR panels of the infrared Ireland heating system. IR saunas are becoming more and more popular because they can also be visited by people who otherwise cannot tolerate high temperatures. With the help of an IR sauna, we achieve many positive effects on the body, some of which are still being discovered by science. We can turn any room into a sauna if we equip it with enough power. Therefore, a smaller space of up to 3 m2 is usually taken, which we equip with approximately 300 W/m2, which in this case would be 900 W. The optimal temperature in infrared panel saunas is from 35 oC to 42 oC. The cost of a one-hour sauna session is only €0.40. IR heating panels are also suitable for hot yoga centers.

IR panels in agriculture

The IR panels of the Infrared Ireland heating system have a beneficial effect on the growth of plants and better well-being of horses in stables and other rooms. IR heating is very useful in breeding animals, because just as humans are positively affected by infrared heat, the number of diseases also decreases due to less dust circulation. In addition, energy consumption for heating the animal is much lower.

IR panels in production

With IR heating of production halls/factories’, we can achieve great savings and excellent thermal comfort for employees. The property of IR heating is that it creates uniform temperatures even in tall buildings, and thus we have additional savings. In addition, it is possible to create heat zones where it is uniformly warm. In this way, we do not heat the entire room if we do not need it. IR heating is also characterized by high responsiveness, no maintenance, low consumption and is therefore a recognized method of heating in many industrial and other halls around the world. As the only method, it is suitable in buildings such as: shipyards, aircraft production or large warehouses.

IR panels in construction - for drying

With IR panels, drying is a friendly process and is also suitable for more sensitive surfaces and objects, such as older wooden works of art, paintings, etc. The drying system with IR panels of the Infrared Ireland heating system, in addition to its ecological acceptability and smooth operation, is also distinguished by its speed, as it is one of the fastest drying systems. Concrete surfaces are generally dry within 48 to 72 hours, and wooden surfaces within 24 to 48 hours.

IR panels in combination with photovoltaics or solar cells

We do not sell solar cells in our company, but we are happy to recommend companies that do. Why do we recommend investing in solar cells in combination with IR heating panels?

The reason is photovoltaics allow you to reduce your running cost of the infrared system, we estimate a reduction annually of 20%. With the feed in tariff coming through now from suppliers its possible to feed your surplus power in to grid in the summer and take this back in the winter. The combination of photovoltaics and IR heating panels is ideal, since the lifespan of photovoltaics and IR panels is over 30 years, and realistically, the investment is repaid the fastest . When will the investment be repaid?

According to the informative calculations we received from onr fo our solar company we work with, the investment for the 5-kilowatt power plant is repaid in about fifteen years, and the additional savings over a total of thirty years of operation an output of about € 8,000.

Considering the growth of prices in the last ten years and according to current forecasts, a further increase in electricity prices is expected. The average Irish household consumes approximately 5,000 kWh of electricity per year, and from this point of view, the decision for a solar power plant is expedient, since the household can produce all the necessary electricity itself and ensure its independence from rising market prices.

What is the approximate investment amount?

You can install photovoltaics with a power of around 7 kW on a house of approximately 110 m2. In principle, about 5 kW is sufficient for an average-sized house. The amount of the investment depends mainly on the power of the power plant - with a power of around 5 kW, the amounts vary between €8,000 and €11,000.

In addition to the contractor’s basic price, the VAT has been removed from all Solar PV install recently which is more of an incentive to install.

Due to the advantages listed above, we reduce heating costs by up to 50 to 60% compared to fuel oil, and up to 20% compared to wood pellets.

It also needs to be noted that our partners in Slovenia have the first self-sufficient residential, which was also the first multi-apartment building of its kind in this part of Slovenia. We have equipped the block with IR panels, which will enable residents to have individually adapted heating. It is also equipped with photovoltaics. You can read the residents’ response below.

Comparison of IR panels with a heat pump and electric convection radiators

The purpose of heating is to raise the average temperature in the room to the extent that it provides us with adequate living or working conditions. Of course, we are always interested in energy consumption, which firstly depends on the heat loss of the room and secondly on the efficiency of the heating system. When we talk about efficiency, we have to measure the performance of the heating device in practical use, in terms of how many units of energy are needed to raise the temperature in the room to the desired level. The latter is also highly dependent on system losses, responsiveness and efficiency of energy use in the room to raise the temperature.

For example, let’s take heating with a heat pump during the transitional period (warm days and cold nights). In this case, the heat pump is in the basement and heats the room on the 2nd floor. The radiators are stocked and installed next to the window. A large loss of energy quickly becomes apparent. The loss of energy continues even when the device is not working (during the day, when it is warm), as energy escapes from the heat storage tank. The story is, of course, different when heating with IR panels. When we heat the room with IR panels, all the energy is consumed in the room and only when we need it. If you are now wondering, isn’t it the same if we heat with any electric heater? No, it’s not! For example, let’s take a 2 kW iron and try to heat the room with it. The difference is significant, which is caused by the different way heat is transferred to the room, and this also shows the different energy consumption. The energy consumption is much higher in the wrong case of heating and to achieve the same temperature, compared to IR panels. With the latter, energy consumption is significantly lower due to optimal heating and almost zero energy loss.

In circumstances such as living and working spaces, IR heating brings less losses than any other electric heating . With IR heating, energy is used extremely efficiently to raise the temperature, provided that the correct heating body is selected, of the correct power and optimally installed. Namely, when the IR panels are not installed correctly, it can happen that the energy consumption rises anyway. To avoid errors during installation, our experts advise you and measure (calculate) heat losses in the apartment before installation. In practice, with proper use , you will save more than 40% compared to an economical electric radiator. When using classic electric radiators, you will almost certainly have problems with moisture, dust and thermal comfort. The reasons are excessive temperature differences between the walls and the air. The difference in the purchase price is thus more than recovered .
